Thanks for the prompt response.

I have checked various fact sheets published for the UK Museums and archives world, and they all say its 70 years.

An allied problem I have had when consulting Google Books is the discovery that on occasion a book which is well out of copyright being published mid C19 is only available in snippit view, and not the full text. I don't see the point of this, unless its someone being careless with the metadata when the book was originally scanned. Any ideas?

That's British law. Each country has their own laws, and it would be nearly impossible to enforce them individually. I imagine this is why the Archive has a blanket rule for overseas.

List of countries' copyright length. Even worse case 120 years or so would be max, but there are books much older with the copyright-region:US tag

Based on my searches above, it sort of looks like some of the scanning libraries are/were using the copyright-region tag inappropriately. It's easy to imagine a minimum wage scanner thinking "it's a US book, so it's in the US copyright region", when in fact the tag means "restricted to US downloaders only", or confusion over what dates should be restricted (like the confusion we're having now!). Or there being a change in policy on how the tag is interpreted, so books scanned earlier with the tag are now restricted that didn't use to be. This is all conjecture, but the inconsistency of the tags use is suggestive.

"restricted to US downloaders only". Why should that be? Surely this is an unjustifiable restriction on international readers. Sounds very much like the regional restrictions on music and video CDs and DVDs. Should not apply to texts, and certainly not public domain ones.

Thanks for the list of copyright extents. A scan down shows only a handful over 70 years and these in small African and Latin American countries. None anywhere near 130!

It's called research.
